A suspect was formally charged today in connection with recent thefts of packages from houses in the Lake Cyrus neighborhood. Over the past three weeks there have been approximately 10 thefts of UPS packages that were delivered to the front door of those homes.
On June 16, a homeowner saw a suspicious person in Lake Cyrus and called 911. The suspect then realized that police were in the area and began throwing stolen packages out of his vehicle as he fled the area. Bessemer Police officers located him at a residence a short time later, and after a brief foot pursuit, he was apprehended. He was taken to the Hoover City Jail on an unrelated Failure to Appear in Court charge. Home surveillance video and witness information provided detectives with sufficient evidence to add the additional charges today. The suspect is charged as follows:
Alforez Daniell Rutledge, 41, Bessemer
- 2 Counts of Receiving Stolen Property, $1,000 bond each
- Failure to Appear (Driving Under the Influence), $1,000 bond
Rutledge is currently being held in the Hoover City Jail. There remains at least one other suspect involved in these thefts. Anyone with additional information about Rutledge’s accomplice should call Hoover Detective Drew Mims at 739-7274.
