New Bucs coach Conor Conway talks to the Bucs during his time as an assistant. He takes over as boys varsity coach this year after one year as Homewood head coach.
Hoover Bucs boys lacrosse team has a new head coach, but he's not a new face.
Former player and assistant coach Conor Conway has been named as the Bucs boys varsity coach. He was head coach at Homewood last season.
Conway was an inaugural member of the Hoover Lacrosse and Bamalax teams in 2006. Conway captained the Hoover teams of 2007 and 2008, and in the 2008 season helped lead the Bucs to their first Alabama State Championship. Conway then went on to become a four-year starter and two-time captain at The University of Alabama MCLA club team, wrapping up his Alabama playing career for the 2012 SELC Western division champs.
Conway’s coaching resume includes his two seasons as assistant coach at Hoover in 2013 and 2014, and as varsity head coach at Homewood this past spring.
Hoover Lacrosse founder and coach Chris Cos said, "I felt it was important to have a legacy player take over as the head coach. Although there were many qualified candidates, in the end, Conor's experience of being an original Hoover player combined with his leadership at Alabama and his head coaching experience at Homewood made him the perfect candidate to be Hoover's third head coach."
Conway takes over for Patrick Johnson who led the Bucs for the previous three seasons and had been involved with the program since 2011. Johnson compiled an impressive win total, and in 2013 guided the varsity team to its state-record fourth Alabama Lacrosse Championship.
Johnson was married over the summer and moved to his hometown of Nashville, Tenn.
Next season is right around the corner, and Conway is ready to get started, “First I would like to thank the Homewood community for giving me my first head coaching position. I am honored the Hoover Lacrosse Board has given me the opportunity to coach the high school program next spring. I am excited to return to the Hoover program as head coach during its 10th anniversary. My staff and I are looking forward to building upon the success that founder Coach Chris Cos and Coach Patrick Johnson have established.”
