Kerry Dewayne Harbin was formally charged in the Sept. 10 robbery of a Lorna Road bank.
A 45-year-old Birmingham man has been charged in the Sept. 10 robbery of the Lorna Road Union Bank.
Kerry Dewayne Harbin was taken into custody in Mississippi on Friday, Oct. 23 after being captured during a traffic stop. New Albany Police Department, Mississippi Highway Patrol and the Union County Sheriff’s Department took him into custody, and he is currently being held at Union County Mississippi Jail.
Hoover detectives went to New Albany, Mississippi on Friday, and Harbin reportedly confessed to the Lorna Road robbery. An arrest warrant was obtained Monday, Oct. 26.
Harbin is charged with third degree robbery on $100,000 bond. He will be extradited back to Alabama when he makes bail on the charges he faces in Mississippi.
On Sept. 10, Harbin passed a note demanding money to a teller at Union Bank. He took cash and fled the area on foot. The suspect was wearing a black wig and baseball cap during the robbery.
Harbin is also believed to be responsible in other bank robberies involving a wigged suspect in Birmingham, Cullman and Prattville.
"We believe this suspect robbed at least six banks in Alabama and it was certainly only a matter of time before he was apprehended," said Hoover PD Capt. Gregg Rector. "A witness in New Albany was able to obtain a getaway vehicle description and that was the break needed to catch him. Mississippi authorities did an outstanding job in their quick response, locating the suspect vehicle and taking the robber into custody. We expect several agencies to charge him with robbery in the next few days."
