December Chamber of Commerce Luncheon
Hoover Mayor Gary Ivey delivered the State of the City address at the Dec. 18 Chamber of Commerce Luncheon, which was sponsored by America's First Federal Credit Union.
Ivey has lived in Hoover for more than 30 years and is president and CEO of the Crest Cadillac dealership in Hoover. He was elected to the Hoover City Council in 2004 and elected Mayor of Hoover in October of 2011. Ivey is also a Trustee at the Church of the Highlands and is married to Carolyn Ivey. They have two daughters, Tyler and Nicole.
"I will continue to work hard to exceed your expectations," Ivey said during his address. "I love being your mayor. If there is anything we can do for you, don't hesitate to call our office."
During his address, Ivey gave an update on public safety, road construction and facility openings.
Public safety
Ivey stated that every school in the Hoover School system now has a full time police officer. Hoover Fire Station 1 is undergoing a full remodel and a fire station is currently being built in Ross Bridge.
Road construction
Ivey said a large number of cars are regularly traveling across the extension of Chapel Lane and the widening of U.S. 31 is complete as the well as the repaving of Lorna Road. Hugh Daniel Drive resurfacing should be complete by late February or early March.
Openings
Ivey announced UAB Medical West's freestanding emergency department will have a grand opening on May 5. He further stated that Whole Foods moving into the former Belle location will be a huge asset to the city.
He said the Hoover Met Tag Office has been a success and that the city is working actively to open a full-service courthouse that will handle everything including driver's licenses.
"We've narrowed it down to three locations. I feel confident that next year we will have a full blown courthouse," he said.
Ivey encouraged guests to attend upcoming city events such as Freedom Fest and the SEC Baseball tournament.
"These are good, safe, family friendly environments," Ivey said.
The next Chamber luncheon will be Thursday, January 15 at the Hoover Country Club. Networking begins at 11:15 a.m. with the luncheon beginning at noon. Please make reservations by Monday, January 12.
