Hoover police identified the victim in yesterday's shooting as 31-year-old Divine Vaniah Chambliss.
Chambliss was found unresponsive Tuesday, Aug. 18 around 3 p.m. when a woman who lived at the apartment returned home from work. She told police the apartment was secure and the only two present were Chambliss and his 2-year-old son.
"Detectives have considered every possible scenario in an attempt to determine who shot the victim," said Capt. Gregg Rector.
Following 24 hours of collecting and analyzing evidence and conducting interviews, police said there has been no indication of an intruder or third person involvement in the incident. Physical evidence also shows the victim did not shoot himself. At this time, police believe the toddler found the loaded handgun and accidentally shot his father.
Police will issue further statements when the final autopsy report is obtained, possibly in the next few days.
