The Hoover Planning and Zoning Commission on Monday night is scheduled to vote on whether to recommend rezoning 273 acres along Interstate 459 to keep it from being developed for apartments.

In an unusual move, city officials are the ones seeking the rezoning instead of the property owners.

U.S. Steel has been trying to get 139 acres subdivided to accommodate 820 apartments on a stretch of land it owns just south of I-459 between Preserve Parkway and Chapel Lane. But the Hoover planning board has twice rejected U.S. Steel’s request, citing an incomplete application.

Now, the city wants to rezone that property and another 134 acres from multi-family use to commercial and single-family use. Other property owners for the land being considered for rezoning Monday night include Ina Ballenger, the Meade Whitaker Sr. Living Trust, and William Paul Glass and Sherry Barrington, city records show.

Also on Monday’s agenda:

The Hoover Planning and Zoning Commission’s meeting is in the William J. Billingsley Council Chambers at the Hoover Municipal Center. A work session is set for 5 p.m., and an action meeting is at 5:30 p.m. Both are open to the public. See the meeting agenda.
