Seniors Marqu'es Webb and Breigha Wilder-Cochran celebrate after a 66-55 win over Blount. Wilder-Cochran was named to the all-tournament team and Webb was tournament MVP.
Senior Marqu'es Webb recorded a double-double as Hoover's girls' basketball team won their second straight AHSAA Class 6A state title, 66-55 over Blount.
The 6-1 center scored 29 points and pulled down 21 rebounds in the championship contest Saturday evening, March 2 to give the Lady Bucs their third title in four years.
Hoover wore out the Leopards in a tough-fought contest in which Blount led at halftime, 27-23.
Blount jumped out to a 13-9 lead in the first period, but the Lady Bucs stayed right with the Leopards in the second.
Hoover finished the third period with a 41-40 lead, and took the lead for good with a Shannan Watkins field goal with 7:36 to play in the contest.
As the fourth quarter neared its end, the Lady Bucs began to pull away with a good performance from the free throw line. Hoover was 13-18 from the charity stripe in the game's final two minutes, putting the game out of reach for Blount.
For her performance Webb was named tournament MVP. Breigha Wilder-Cochran and Kara Rawls were named to the all-tournament team.
Wilder-Cochran was second on the team with 14 points. Rawls added 11 points and was second on the squad with six rebounds.
Rawls, Webb and Wilder-Cochran were all playing their final game as Lady Bucs. Joining them were seniors Jasmine Brown, Sara Mitchell, Olivia Adamson and Courtney Hunter.
