Two Spain Park players announce commitments to FBS schools

Perry Young and Tyler Sumpter, a pair of Spain Park football players, have announced commitments to Football Bowl Subdivision programs.

Young, an outside linebacker for the Jaguars who will likely play safety at the college level, committed to the University of Cincinnati and head coach Tommy Tuberville on December 14.

Spain Park advanced to the Class 7A state championship game, falling to McGill-Toolen by a score of 14-12 inside Bryant-Denny Stadium. Young pitched in with seven tackles in the game to lead the team. 

He is rated as a two-star prospect by the 247Sports composite, which aggregates rankings across multiple recruiting websites. He registered 70 tackles on the season, with 13.5 tackles for loss and four sacks. He also held offers from Southern Miss, Arkansas State, Georgia Southern, and Jackson State.

Sumpter has pledged to continue his student-athlete career at Troy University. The punter and kickoff specialist for Spain Park averaged 37.1 yards on 63 punts.

“I feel loved at Troy, and that's what's important to me. What makes it special is that Coach (Neal) Brown had a good first year, and expects to be better each year. I want to be a part of that. I want to be a part of something special,” Sumpter said.

Sumpter punted the ball seven times against McGill-Toolen, averaging 38.9 yards and downing three of them inside the 20-yard line.
