Spain Park High School’s Rachel Cunningham captured two state championship medals at the Alabama High School Athletic Association’s 6A-7A Swimming and Diving Championship at the end of last year.

Cunningham won first place in both the 100-yard breaststroke with a time of 1:02.35 and the 200-yard individual medley with a time of 2:04.44. Both performances broke her own Spain Park team records and narrowly missed breaking the state records.

Cunningham is an Olympic Trial qualifier in the 100-meter and 200-meter breaststroke and will be competing in the 2016 Olympic trials in June.

The Spain Park girls team finished 12th as a team in the state meet, while the Spain Park boys placed 13th.

The Hoover girls team placed ninth in the state, while the Hoover boys finished 37th.

Swimmer Sydney Biswal and diver Victoria Perry were the top scorers on the Hoover girls team, while the Hoover boys only made the finals cut in one event. The relay team of John Michael Alfano, Jason Lee, Justin Sims and Guy Griffies placed 16th in the 200-yard medley relay.
