by

The Hoover Buccaneers defeated Buckhorn 38-13 at the Hoover Met last Friday to advance to the second round of the Class 7A state playoffs. Only eight teams remain, since the 32-school classification had 16 teams in the playoffs. In the round of eight, basically it's the quarterfinals. Tuscaloosa County, a region rival, visits the Bucs on Friday at 7 p.m. Tickets are $8. Hoover won the first meeting 66-27 at Northport.

Prior to the game Friday, Hoover High will have a pep rally at 2:56 p.m. Three players will be recognized at this event. Darrell Williams will receive his jersey for the Under Armour All-America Game. The Southeastern Touchdown Club of Birmingham will also be at the pep rally to recognize Marcus Webb and Hunter Schmith. Webb was selected the Player of the Week for his performance against Hewitt-Trussville. Schmith was selected the Academic (Scholar) Player of the Week.

The Hoover girls basketball team (4-0) swept to the championship of the Big Orange Classic, winning the championship by beating Sparkman 62-45. Jailyn Maddox scored 24 points to lead the way in the final.

Shades Mountain Christian's Dylan Pausic won the individual Class 1A-2A boys state title at Oakville Indian Mounds Park. Pausic, a junior, posted a time of 16:33.81 over the 3.1-mile course. Pausic was second in the event last season as a sophomore.
