The Hoover High School competitive cheer team placed third in Class 7A of the Alabama High School Athletic Association’s state cheer championships this past weekend at Wallace State Community College in Hanceville.

Bob Jones High School in Madison won the contest, and Vestavia Hills High School came in second.

The Hoover High School competitive cheer team is made up of 30 girls on the mat and seven alternates. They performed a 2 1/2-minute routine that included tumbling, jumps, stunts, pyramids and a crowd response cheer.

"We are incredibly proud of these young women,” said their coach, Meri Glenn Freeman, in a press release. “These student-athletes have worked so hard and have surpassed all our expectations. We are excited about our top three finish at state, and we are looking forward to continuing our hard work as we prepare to compete in Orlando in February at the National High School Cheerleading Championships."
