Frederick will not return as coach of Lady Bucs

Tiffany Frederick will not return for a fifth season as head coach of the Hoover High School girls basketball program, athletic director Andy Urban confirmed on Monday afternoon.

"It was just time for a change," he said. "There were things that were discussed that we felt like needed to be addressed. We feel those would be better addressed with a new coach."

Frederick led the Lady Bucs to a 23-7 record this season and a Class 7A Northwest Regional Final berth, where they fell to Hazel Green. In her first year at the helm, she led the program to the 2013 Class 6A state championship.

"Timing wise, it was good for both of us to go in different directions," Urban said, mentioning that Frederick would have the rest of the school year and summer to pursue a new coaching job elsewhere or to retain her teaching duties at Hoover.

Jailyn Maddox (VCU) and Kendra Langham (University of Mobile) were seniors on this year's team that will play basketball at the collegiate level. Maddox's younger sister, freshman Joiya, came on strong towards the end of the season, including a ten-point performance in the regional semifinals against Bob Jones.

Urban believes that the situation is a positive one for the next head coach of the Lady Bucs.

He said, "We have a great administration and great resources to help them be successful. It's high school athletics and we need to provide kids opportunities to be a part of something and to grow emotionally, spiritually. We need them challenged in all those and that's what we're ultimately here to do."

Urban would like to have a new coach in place by the time the Hoover City Schools Board of Education meets in May, and said that the school is now accepting applicants for the job.
