Bucs shut down Vestavia; Bessemer City up next

The number one ranked Hoover Bucs stuffed the vaunted Vestavia Hills offense and continued its winning streak with a 17-7 win.  

Bradrick Shaw led the Hoover attack with a touchdown and 104 yards on 14 carries. Justin Johnson added 79 yards and a touchdown on just four catches.

“We were proud to play a great Vestavia team that is well coached,” Bucs Head Football Coach Josh Niblett said. “What you see is what you get with their team. They were a unique challenge because they try to impose their will on you; even running on third-and-nine if they want. That’s what high school football is all about.”

If any statistic revealed the difficulties of the night, it was the paucity of third down yardage.  Vestavia averaged 0.1 yards per third down play.

Jaterrius Gulley, a senior defensive tackle for the Bucs, was proud of the effort against the Rebels offense.  “It was a hard-hitting game, but we knew it would be.”

Colin Silva, a senior tight end for Hoover, gave credit to the Rebels.  “They have a strong defense with fast defensive ends,” he explained.  “It was a good matchup.”

Next week, the top-ranked Bucs defend their winning streak as they host Bessemer City.
