Bucs' Shaw commits to Wisconsin

Hoover High running back Bradrick Shaw has committed to play collegiately at the University of Wisconsin. Shaw, who finished his senior season with 1,255 yards rushing and 17 touchdowns, helped the Bucs to three straight state championships. He announced his decision via Twitter on Saturday. He picked Wisconsin over Vanderbilt, South Carolina and Minnesota. He also had offers from Ole Miss and Mississippi State. National Signing Day is Wednesday, Feb. 4.

The Hoover Bucs (20-6) boys basketball team knocked off third-ranked Mountain Brook 57-55 in overtime Saturday. Dylan Smith’s basket at the buzzer, two of his 15 points, was the game-winner. The seventh-ranked Bucs have won 10 straight games since a two-point loss to Bessemer City in the Steel City Invitational in late December. The Bucs will travel to Fairfield for a non-area game Tuesday, Jan. 27, at 7:30 p.m. The sixth-ranked Lady Bucs (19-6), coming off a win over Georgia power Carrollton, will face Fairfield at 6.

The Spain Park boys basketball team, ranked No. 2 in Class 7A, will host Oak Mountain at 7:30 p.m. on Tuesday, Jan. 27. The Jaguars (22-3, 5-1 Area 6) are coming off a 49-33 win over Vestavia Hills. Austin Wiley scored 24 points, pulled down 15 rebounds and blocked four shots. The Lady Jags (21-8) will face the Lady Eagles at 6 p.m. Mountain Brook won a coin toss Monday and will host the Class 7A, Area 6 boys basketball tournament. The Spartans and Spain Park tied for the area title. The area tourney will be Feb. 5 and 7. Spain Park will face Vestavia Hills at 6 p.m. on Thursday, Feb. 5 and Mountain Brook will host Hewitt-Trussville at 7:30. The area championship will be Saturday, Feb. 7.
