Hoover school board tables vote on 2017-18 calendar

The Hoover school board on Monday night voted to table a decision on the calendar for the 2017-18 school year.

The board is considering two calendar options. Option A would start school on Aug. 8, 2017, and include a full week out for Thanksgiving, while Option B would start school on Aug. 14, 2017, and have three weekdays out of school at Thanksgiving.

Option A would end the first semester on Dec. 20, 2017, while Option B would end the semester on Dec. 22, 2017.

The rest of the proposed 2017-18 calendars are the same, including the same week of spring break for 2018 (March 26-30) and students out of school for Labor Day (Sept. 4), a teacher workday on Oct. 9, Veterans Day (Nov. 10), two professional development days for teachers on Feb 19-20, a teacher workday on April 23 and Memorial Day (May 28).

Both of the 2017-18 calendars also would end school on May 23, 2018.

The board will resume discussion next school year.

At Monday's meeting, the school board also recognized the school system's teachers nominated for the Jacksonville State University Teacher Hall of Fame.

A few parents spoke about ongoing rezoning plans, specifically for Gwin Elementary, Riverchase Elementary and Trace Crossings Elementary. Their concerns included the transfer of certain neighborhoods to new school zones under the proposed plans, longer commutes and divided communities.

The next Hoover school board meeting is scheduled for 5:30 p.m. on March 14 at Rocky Ridge Elementary.
