Hoover schools, NAACP, Justice Department to share action plan on desegregation issues

by

The Hoover school system, U.S. Department of Justice and NAACP Legal Defense and Educational Fund are holding a community meeting Thursday night to discuss a plan they have developed to end federal supervision of desegregation issues in Hoover schools.

U.S. District Judge Madeline Haikala previously ordered the parties in a decades-old desegregation lawsuit to decide what actions the Hoover school system needs to take to prove it has met the goals of the desegregation court order.

The plan addresses things such as how faculty and students are assigned to schools, student discipline, the condition of school facilities, and student involvement in extracurricular activities, gifted and talented programs and advanced course offerings.

On Thursday night, the parties in the case will share the plan and ask for public feedback. The community meeting is set for 6:30 p.m. at Trace Crossings Elementary School at 5454 Learning Lane.
