Hoover High band draws about 400 to spring concert

The Hoover High School band program held its spring performance on Thursday, drawing a crowd of about 400 people to see five groups perform, according to band booster Donald Blair.

The concert band, with about 100 members under the direction of Matthew Cicero, performed “Military Escort” by Harold Bennett, “A Tallis Prelude” by Douglas Akey and “Critical Mass” by Todd Stalter. 

The symphonic band, with about 90 members under the direction of Sallie Vines White, performed “The Black Horse Troop” by John Phillip Sousa, “Suite of Old French Songs” by Pierre LaPlante and “Sky Bound” by Todd Stalter. 

The percussion ensembles, under the direction of Jeff Fondren, performed “The Whistler” by George Hamilton Greene, “Dance Macabre” by Camille Saint-Saens and “Fidget” by Nathan Daughtrey. 

The symphonic winds, with about 80 members under the direction of Ryan Fitchpatrick, performed “American Overture” by Joseph Willcox Jenkins, “Firefly” by Ryan George and “Symphony for Band, Movement 2” by Morton Gould.
