Hoover City Schools sends two to Alabama Girls State

Montanna Darty of Hoover High School and Mary Alice Crocker of Spain Park have been chosen to represent their respective schools the upcoming Alabama Girls State, sponsored by the American Legion Auxiliary, held at the University of Alabama. 

Well known speakers and other state, county and city officials are expected to visit and enlighten the young women on their civic responsibilities.

For one week, the young women will apply the duties, responsibilities, and privileges of being an American through practical self-government tasks. They will first become citizens of an imaginary state. They will be involved in the self-governing politics of their respective community by campaigning for and electing city, county, and state offices. 

Darty and Crocker will also learn more about the government by participating in party caucuses and the election process.

Crocker plans to campaign for the office of city council member, while Darty plans for mayor. The girls will speak to not only their sponsoring organization, American Legion Post 911 and Hoover High School respectively, but all others as well about their experience throughout the week.

Crocker, daughter of Scott and Nicole Crocker, was chosen because of her outstanding leadership. In her high school and community, she is involved with Spain Park Ambassadors, senior class officers, Key Club, National Honor Society, and South Highland Presbyterian youth group. 

Darty was also chosen because of her outstanding leadership. She is involved with Hoover Belles, American Heart Association Sweethearts, TNT peer helpers, Alabama Dance Academy and Senior Class Officers as vice-president. She is the daughter of Chris and Tara Darty.
