Gwin Elementary fifth-graders visit Montgomery

Gwin Elementary fifth graders recently travelled to Montgomery where they saw first-hand where the state’s elected officials work, toured government buildings and saw historic and significant landmarks of Alabama, and as part of the social studies curriculum. 

The trip provided a fun and educational setting to learn about Alabama’s government. The students toured the State House and saw where the Alabama House of Representatives and Senate worked; learned about the legislative process as they participated in a mock vote on extending the summer school holiday to six months; toured the Capitol and learned some historical elements about the building, such as the rotunda, the flag display of each state, and the paintings of previous governor. They also visited the Rosa Parks Museum where they were given a guided tour detailing important dates, people, and documents pertaining to this era and watched a movie and listened to interviews of people involved in the Civil Rights movement. The students stopped at the Archives and History museum where they were given a tour and were able to study displays in the state’s history. Along the way, they saw several other famous and significant landmarks in Alabama.

The mission of Gwin Elementary is to establish a strong foundation for lifelong learning for all students by providing opportunities for academic, social, physical, and emotional growth in a child-centered environment.  The school uses a variety of research-based strategies to ensure that each student reaches his/her maximum potential.
