Bike rodeo at Rocky Ridge to promote safety awareness

Friday, Oct. 4, students at Rocky Ridge Elementary will participate in a bike rodeo to learn about traffic safety.

The event is being held to promote ThinkFirst Alabama, an initiative by Kohl’s to promote bicycle safety awareness. During the rodeo, Kohl’s will present Children’s of Alabama with a check for $98,744. According to a release, the gift supports Children’s of Alabama’s initiative to reduce the number of traumatic injuries it treats from bicycling. In the past five years, Kohl’s has donated more than $ $550,000 to Children’s.

During the event, Dr. James Johnston, medical director of Kohl’s ThinkFirst Alabama and a pediatric neurosurgeon at UAB who treats patients at Children’s, will discuss brain injuries with students and faculty at Rocky Ridge Elementary School in Hoover. Johnston will also release Children’s latest bicycle trauma statistics.

The rodeo will feature stations to teach students the proper fit of a bike helmet and bike, and have them ride a short obstacle course.

The rodeo begins at 9:30 a.m., and a media announcement will follow at 10 a.m.

Rocky Ridge Elementary School is located at 2876 Old Rocky Ridge Road, Hoover, AL 35243
