2013 City Leaders’ Breakfast

Members of the Hoover Police Department, Fire Department and Shelby County School SRO Officers were in attendance as the Hoover High School choir sang the national anthem at the 2013 City Leaders’ Breakfast Jan. 31 at Discovery United Methodist Church.

The breakfast commemorated third and fifth graders who won poetry, essay and art contests held in the Hoover elementary schools. The Hoover High School and Spain Park High School choirs also performed for the crowd including a collaborating performance of “America the Beautiful.”

The winners of the third-grade poetry contest were: first place, Ruben Morris from Shades Mountain Elementary school; second place, Catherine Stark from Riverchase Elementary School; and third place, Abby Pat from Gwin Elementary School.

The winners of the fifth-grade essay contest were: first place, Makenna Kuhn from Riverchase Elementary School; second place, Abigail Ford from Gwin Elementary School; and third place, Caroline Locker from Bluff Park Elementary School.

Corrine Crawford from Gwin Elementary School won the Fire Prevention Art Contest. An artist from Gwin Elementary has won the contest two years in a row.

The ceremony ended with Chief Nicholas C. Derzis of the Hoover Police Department who spoke on the improvement of safety and awareness for elementary schools in Shelby County.
