Hoover Service Club awards Flora Mae Pike Community Service Award

The Hoover Service Club held their annual award ceremony on March 14 at the Hoover Country Club, where they awarded the 2019 Flora Mae Pike Hoover Community Service Award and recognized eight nominees and 14 past recipients of this award.

The Hoover Service Club was founded in 1975 by Flora Mae Pike, her daughter Mary Lou Pike Woolley and eight other women with a commitment to help others. Flora Mae Pike’s granddaughter and Mary Lou Pike Woolley’s daughter, Carole Woolley Vandiver of Montgomery, attended the ceremony.

The Flora Mae Pike Hoover Community Service Award began in 1990 to recognize deserving individuals for their outstanding volunteer service in the Hoover community. Everyone present at the event wore red ribbons and gold pins in recognition of the 30th presentation of this award. All nominees were presented with certificates of appreciation for their achievements in volunteer service to the Hoover community.The 2019 nominees were Jay Clyce and daughter Megan Clyce; Ray Dugas; Pippa Lother and Shehzan Maredia; Ardith McMicken (2019 Flora Mae Pike Hoover Community Service Award recipient); Sylvia Sumners; and Charon Rivers. All of the nominees are dedicated, hard working, outstanding leaders with a heart for service and a spirit for using their time and talents to benefit the Hoover community in varied volunteer roles.

As part of the award ceremony, the Hoover Service Club presented a rose and recognized each of the former award recipients for the lasting differences their hard work, dedication and volunteer spirit. Those recipients in attendance were Sylvia Swaim, Becky Donnelly, Lois Taylor, Charlotte Poe Williams, Lynda Wasden, Judy Holcombe, Winnie Cooper, Martha Yeilding, Sara Perry, Roberta Atkinson, Paula Campbell, Betty Daigle and Greg and Donna Bishop.
