Hoover Cup returns

The Hoover Parks and Recreation Foundation is holding its third annual Hoover Cup golf tournament at the Inverness Country Club on Oct. 19.

The tournament is scheduled to begin at 8 a.m. with a shotgun start and four-person scramble format, parks and recreation superintendent Dee Nance said. The cost is $125 per golfer or $500 per team.

The foundation plans to use proceeds to help fund two projects: a new bay of swings at the playground at HooverSports Park East and a veterans memorial monument at Aldridge Gardens, said Richard Riess, vice president for the foundation.

The tournament drew about 18 teams the first year and about 20 teams last year, Nance said. The goal this year is 25 teams, she said.

The first year’s tournament had more sponsors and raised about $10,000, while last year’s tournament took in about $7,000, Nance said.

The winning team will receive four rounds of golf at the Inverness Country Club, Riess said. A $10,000 prize is available to anyone who gets a hole in one on either of two designated holes, Nance said.

Other door prizes include: two nights and two rounds of golf at the Palmetto Bluff resort in Bluffton, S.C.; golf rounds at several Robert Trent Jones Golf Trail courses in Alabama; and a pair of tickets to the Alabama-Auburn football game.

The tournament also will include competitions for the longest drive, straightest drive, longest putt and closest shot to the pin.

Companies, organizations or individuals may sponsor holes for $150 or save a little money by sponsoring a hole and registering a four-person team for $600, Nance said.
