On Sept. 24, the Laura Crandall Brown Foundation will hold its seventh annual Head Over Teal 5K/10K and Fall Festival at The Preserve in Hoover. Together with the help of the Brookwood Baptist Health, the Foundation is looking to once again make a difference and raise awareness for gynecologic cancers.

“[We’re] proud to again partner with the Laura Crandall Brown Foundation for this year’s Head Over Teal event,” said Brookwood Baptist Health President and CEO Keith Parrott. “It is a true honor to unite with a group who is also dedicated to restoring and advocating for good health to those in our local communities.”

This year alone, 90,000 cases of gynecologic cancer will be diagnosed; 30,000 of which will be fatal. There is little-to-no available early detection for these cancers.

Because of this, the LCBF focuses on early detection research and has donated more than $275,000 to early detection research, educate community members about gynecologic cancers and support numerous families and cancer patients since its creation in 2009.

“So many people return to Head Over Teal because of the family-friendly environment that it creates,” said Doris Moody, board member of the Foundation. “The [races] are a challenge, and prizes are given, but I think the biggest draw is for those who form teams in support of or in honor of the brave young people or women who have suffered from these diseases.”

The LCBF race is a 5K, 10K and 1-mile fun run/walk meant for both two-legged and four-legged family members, and the post-race fall festival will be open to everyone. Games, children’s inflatables, face painting and crafts will be featured.

“Fundraisers [like this] are important to provide the funding needed to carry out our important mission, most specifically, providing grants to researchers who will help detect ovarian cancer at its early stages and give all girls at any stage a chance to fight it, to beat it and to live,” Moody said.
