UA freshman wins Miss Hoover Pageant

University of Alabama freshman Callie Walker won the 2016 Miss Hoover Scholarship Pageant on July 11. The pageant returned this year following a two-year hiatus.

Walker received the Talent Award for her ballet en point performance, and she received scholarships of $5,075. In June 2016, Walker will represent the City of Hoover in the Miss Alabama Pageant.

The inaugural Miss Hoover’s Outstanding Teen Pageant, for participants ages 13-17, was also held on July 11. Bragg Scroggins, one of the directors of the pageant, said 15 girls participated in the Outstanding Teen Pageant, which is a high turnout for that group.

Lindsay Fincher won the Outstanding Teen title as well as the Evening Wear/Onstage Question Award, and she will represent Hoover in the 2016 Miss Alabama’s Outstanding Teen Pageant.

Keith Brashier directed the pageants along with Scroggins this year, and both said they were glad to bring the Miss Hoover Pageant back to the city.

“The City of Hoover deserved representation at Miss Alabama,” Scroggins said. “This was all made possible by the generous contribution of City Councilman Gene Smith and his wife, Pam Smith. Without their financial support, these pageants would not have been possible.”

Scroggins said the Miss Hoover and Miss Hoover’s Outstanding Teen pageants both had a good turnout and a good competition. The winners were also excited for their scholarships and the chance to compete at the next level, he said.

“The Miss Alabama Pageant provides tens of thousands of dollars in scholarships to contestants,” Brashier said. “It is an amazing program that allows contestants to pay their college tuition and pursue opportunities that otherwise would not be possible.”

As Miss Hoover and Miss Hoover’s Outstanding Teen, Scroggins said both Walker and Fincher are ready to make appearances at events or do whatever they can to represent the City of Hoover.

“They’re here to represent the city, and if anyone needs one of them or both of them to represent the city, reach out to us,” Scroggins said. “That’s one reason they competed, and they’re excited to help out.”
