Police collecting prescription drugs as part of DEA National Take-Back initiative

Police departments around the country will take back unused prescription drugs on Saturday, Oct. 22.

National Prescription Drug Take-Back Day aims to provide a “safe, convenient and responsible means of disposing prescription drugs,” according to the website for the Drug Enforcement Administration. The day also aims to inform the public about prescription drug abuse.

In May of this year, during another national prescription drug take-back day, the DEA collected around 447 tons of unused and unwanted medication at 5,400 sites across the country. Only pills and patches — no liquids or needles — will be accepted. The service is free and anonymous.

The Hoover Police Department will collect prescription drugs at the office at 100 Municipal Lane. The Shelby County Task Force will have a collection site at the Greystone YMCA at 5414 Highway 280.
