One person dead, four others sent to hospitals after car went wrong way on I-65 in Hoover

One person is dead and four more were sent to hospitals this morning after someone drove the wrong direction on Interstate 65 and caused a three-vehicle crash, Hoover police said.

The wreck occurred in the southbound lanes of I-65 between Alford Avenue and U.S. 31 about 4 a.m., Hoover police Lt. Keith Czeskleba said in a press release.

The driver of a silver Chevrolet Cruze was traveling northbound in the southbound lanes and struck a Honda Accord, which in turn was struck by a black Chevrolet Cruze also heading southbound, Czeskleba said.

A passenger in the Honda Accord was killed, a second passenger in the Accord was taken to Children’s Hospital with serious injuries. The driver of the Accord was taken to UAB Hospital with minor injuries.

The driver and a passenger of the black Chevrolet Cruze also were taken to UAB with minor injuries.

The driver of the silver Chevrolet Cruze, was was traveling the wrong direction, got out of his vehicle and left the scene on foot but was spotted walking on Alford Avenue by police searching the area and taken into custody, Czeskleba said. His identity is being withheld pending formal charges.

The identity of the person who died also was being withheld pending notification of family. All lanes of Interstate 65 are back open, Czeskleba said.
