A 24-year-old man from Ensley is dead following an altercation with his girlfriend's stepfather, according to a release from Hoover police.

Police responded to a shooting at an apartment in the Ashby at Ross Bridge apartments Sunday, Nov. 27 around 10:25 a.m. The victim was visiting his girlfriend, according to police, when he and his girlfriend's stepfather got into a physical altercation. The stepfather then shot the victim, according to police.

"Our hope will always be that people will learn to resolve conflict without violence," Hoover PD Capt. Gregg Rector said. "It’s just horribly sad when we see individuals who no longer respect one another or value human life as they should."

The stepfather, a 45-year-old Hoover resident, reportedly left the scene and was later captured by Bessemer Police during a traffic stop. He was taken to Hoover Police Department for questioning.

Following the shooting, Hoover Fire Department responded to the scene and pronounced the victim dead. The victim's name is being withheld pending notification of his family. This is the city's third homicide of the year.

"This is our city’s third homicide of 2016, and while one is certainly too many, overall we’re very fortunate to continue to see very low levels of violent crime," Rector said.

Hoover police will work with the Bessemer Division of the District Attorney's office to determine charges, Rector said.

Anyone with information about this case can contact Detective Andrew Mims at 739-7274 or Crime Stoppers of Metro Alabama at 254-7777.
