Hoover police keeping a close eye on I-459, I-65

On Sunday and Monday, Hoover Police Officers issued 246 warnings and 86 citations. Administrative Services Captain Jim Coker said most of these citations were for speeding and following another vehicle too closely, which are both major causes of accidents.

After four fatalities on I-459 and I-65 last week, the department is enacting a “Zero Tolerance” policy on its sections of the two highways.

More police officers will be patrolling the roads and making sure drivers are wearing their seatbelts, staying within the speed limits and keeping their eyes on the road rather than a phone. The department’s goal is “zero accidents, zero injuries and zero fatalities.” Coker said the policy, which began on Sunday, will remain in place “until further notice.”

Signs have been placed on the interstates to remind drivers to be careful, and the police are serious about preventing a repeat of last week’s tragedies.
