Council discusses Southland Drive widening project
During a July meeting, the city council discussed several road projects.
The council postponed a vote to approve a Southland Drive widening project, citing the mayor had concerns about the budget.
"We have engineered a much more in-depth project than we had originally thought," said Hoover Executive Director Allen Pate.
Pate said the road does not have a base. The project was originally budgeted for $415,000 but is now budgeted at around $590,000. The council will discuss the project at the July 21 meeting.
Also during the meeting, Councilman Gene Smith said that Freedom Fest, held on July 4 at the Hoover Met, had a record turnout with an estimated 13,000 in attendance.
In other news, the council:
- Approved a resolution to execute an agreement with ALDOT for intersection improvements on South Shades Crest Road at Eden Ridge Drive and Shades Run Circle.

In May, the council agreed to enter a maintenance contract with ALDOT to resurface Hugh Daniel Drive. The repaving will cover about 4,000 feet of road from U.S. 280 east to Dunavant Road. The project will cost about $1.3 million to complete with the City of Hoover paying 20 percent or $260,000. Mayor Gary Ivey said the project should begin in late summer or early fall.
