Hoover City Council to consider $70 million sportsplex on Monday

The Hoover City Council on Monday plans to vote on whether to build a $70 million sports complex.

Officials are being tight-lipped about the project until Monday’s City Council meeting, but a resolution on the council’s agenda states that the Hoover Sportsplex would cost an estimated $70 million.

City Council President Jack Wright said the facility would encompass not only sports but also meetings, banquets and trade shows. The complex likely would be in the vicinity of Hoover Metropolitan Stadium, where there already are 3,400 parking spaces available, Wright said.

Neither he nor Mayor Gary Ivey would say what all would be included in the complex, but city officials have been looking for land for additional sports fields for some time. In the past, lacrosse and soccer have been identified as areas of need, but there is not yet any indication whether those sports would be impacted by this complex.

Ivey said he promised he wouldn’t discuss it before Monday night and wants to live up to his word.

Wright said Hoover tries to do things first-class, and this facility will be first-class.

Monday’s City Council agenda also includes an architectural services agreement with Goodwyn Mills & Cawood and construction management services agreement with Brasfield & Gorrie, both associated with the Hoover Sportsplex.
