Golf tournament at Hoover Country Club Monday to benefit summer camp for deaf children

The Christian Deaf Fellowship has scheduled a golf tournament for Monday, May 23, to benefit a summer camp for deaf children.

The golf tournament is scheduled to take place at the Hoover Country Club and costs $125 per person or $500 per team of four. It’s scheduled to begin at 9 a.m. with a shotgun start and four-person scramble format. A practice area will open and coffee will be served at 7:30 a.m.

After play is completed, a barbecue lunch will be served and awards distributed for the top three teams, closest to the hole, longest drive and any holes in one. There also will be door prizes and goodie bags. Organizers are looking for tournament and hole sponsors.

It costs about $250 to provide a summer camp experience for each deaf child, Christian Deaf Fellowship volunteer Sherry Berry said. Last year, organizers expected about 70 campers at Camp Shocco for the Deaf in Talladega and ended up having about 120, she said. They had to scramble to raise money to serve them all, she said.

This is the first year a golf tournament has been held to benefit the camp, Berry said.
