Election Update: Aug. 12

On Aug. 23, Hoover voters will have the chance to elect their 2016-2020 City Council members and mayor. The Hoover Sun will provide weekly recaps each week leading up to the election, so you can easily keep up with everything you need to know before you vote.

Here’s the latest:

·       This coming Tuesday, Aug. 16, there will be an election forum with the three mayoral candidates and 15 candidates seeking the seven seats on the Hoover City Council. The forum will be in the ballroom at the Hyatt Regency Birmingham — The Wynfrey Hotel. Doors open at 5:15 for a meet-and-greet time with candidates in a nearby room, and the forum will begin at 6 p.m. in the ballroom and is expected to end around 9 p.m. The forum is sponsored by the Hoover Sun, Hoover City Schools Foundation and Hoover Rotary Club. Each organization will have a representative asking questions. Submit suggested questions for candidates on this online form or email them to Jon Anderson at janderson@starnespublishing.com. Mike Royer, a longtime Birmingham TV news broadcaster who now is managing editor at the University of Alabama’s WVUA-TV/Channel 23, will serve as moderator. The night will end with another meet-and-greet time with candidates, with light concessions being sold.

·       Another forum with all 18 candidates was held Tuesday, Aug. 9, at Shades Crest Baptist Church. That forum was sponsored by the bluffparkal.org website and Monte D’Oro Neighborhood Association. See the report from that forum here.

·       Dr. Trey Lott aims to return to Hoover City Council Place 1

·       Letters to the editor: A group of residents in Ross Bridge said in a letter that Mayor Gary Ivey has failed to demonstrate transparent and collaborative leadership, in particular regarding the Hoover school system. Former Hoover school board member Suzy Baker responded to that letter with a letter of her own, saying Ivey has provided excellent leadership and management, including support of schools.

·       Regular absentee ballots must be applied for by Aug. 18. 

·       A runoff election, should it be required, will be held Oct. 4. Elected officials will take office Nov. 7.
