At 4 a.m. on Jan. 14, Hoover Police officers responded to the Deer Valley neighborhood on a report of an attempted vehicle theft.

A homeowner in the 5400 block of Cottage Lane was warming up his truck while getting ready for work. As he walked outside to check on his vehicle, the victim saw an unknown black male sitting in the driver's seat. The suspect exited the truck and ran down Cottage Lane.

The victim pursued and the suspect fired a handgun at the victim. The victim, who was also armed with a handgun, fired back at the suspect. Neither are believed to be injured.

The suspect was picked up by a second suspect who was waiting in a nearby vehicle. The car is possibly an early 2000s silver Nissan 350z or similar body style. The vehicle fled in an unknown direction on Ross Bridge Parkway. The suspect was wearing a red, shirt, black cap and jeans.

Hoover detectives are working with Mountain Brook Police Department and comparing similarities with a carjacking that occurred there at 6 a.m.
