Making Tracks for Celiacs

Making Tracks for Celiacs will be held this Saturday, May 4 at the Hoover Met.

Funds raised will be used to increase awareness and support research for celiac disease, a genetic disorder affecting children and adults. People with celiac disease are unable to eat foods that contain gluten, which is found in wheat, barley and rye. For people with celiac disease, gluten sets off an autoimmune reaction that causes the destruction of the villi in the small intestine. They produce antibodies to attack the gluten, but the same antibodies also attack the intestine, causing damage and illness. Untreated celiac disease can be life threatening.

The 5K Walk/Run begins at 8 a.m., and a 1-mile Fun Run follows at 9 a.m.

Entry fees are $35 for adults and $25 for under age 13 for the 5K, and the fun run is $20.

The World of Gluten Free Vendor Fair and Family Friendly Picnic will be follow the awards in the Banquet Room at the Met.
