Hoover council to vote on transportation network company (Uber) ordinance Tuesday
The Hoover City Council on Tuesday night is scheduled to vote on an ordinance that would allow and regulate transportation network companies such as Uber and Lyft.
Many municipalities in the Birmingham-Hoover metro area already have approved such ordinances, but Hoover officials delayed consideration of such an ordinance until they could work out details that were suitable to both city officials and a representative for Uber, which recently entered this market.
Hoover police Chief Nick Derzis initially had some concerns about making sure proper background checks are conducted on drivers for transportation network companies, which provide people rides arranged through a digital network such as an app on a phone.
And city officials also wanted to make sure each transportation network company is properly insured and licensed by the city to do business in Hoover.
Uber, meanwhile, had concerns with some of the wording in the original ordinance proposed by city officials and asked for some modifications, which resulted in a two-week delay.
Derzis said two weeks ago he had all of his concerns addressed, so now the ordinance is coming up for a vote Tuesday night. The Hoover City Council meeting is scheduled to start at 6 p.m. at the Hoover Municipal Center.
