Three Hoover City Schools have welcomed two new assistant principals this fall, including one who will serve in a unique role working at two different schools.
Jamie Smith will spend part of her day at Brock's Gap Intermediate and part of her day at Deer Valley Elementary. Her roles will vary at each school and will range from extended day programs and teacher evaluations to professional development, discipline and supervision.
April Bucki is the new assistant principal of Riverchase Elementary School. In this role, Bucki will support principal Alice Turney in variety of capacities and work with the school's teachers, including math and reading coaches.
Smith has been in education for 19 years, including seven as an assistant principal. She came to Hoover from Pelham City Schools, where she served as an assistant principal at Pelham High School. Smith has also worked in school systems in Georgia and north Alabama, teaching grades 6-12 English, journalism, SAT prep, computer applications, keyboarding and technology.
"My administration experience has taken me from high school to elementary back to high school, and now back to elementary,” Smith said. “It's an honor and a privilege to be a part of the Hoover community."
Smith holds degrees from Jacksonville State University, Columbus State University, Troy University and Samford University. She, along with husband Greg and their son Jonah, enjoy family time, movies and the beach.
Bucki said she is excited to kick off her 21st year in education by working at Riverchase Elementary. Prior to this new position, she taught at Deer Valley Elementary for eight years and 12 years at Moody Elementary School.
"I am proud to be a part of Hoover City Schools and the opportunities the system provides for its administrators, teachers and students," Bucki said. I look forward to working with students and parents to build positive relationships in the community."
Bucki received her undergraduate and graduate degrees from UAB and earned her National Board Teacher Certification in 2012. She and her husband, Jay, enjoy time with their families, pets and going to the beach.
