A press conference was held on Sept. 25 to update the community on the murder case of Xavier Beasley.
Three weeks ago today, 25-year-old Xavier Montrez Beasley was shot and killed as he left work at the Home Depot on U.S. 280.
Gov. Robert Bentley’s office announced earlier this week that a $5,000 will be awarded for information that leads to the arrest of Beasley’s killer.
A press conference was held Friday, Sept. 25 to discuss the case of Beasley’s murder and to ask the public for help.
“Regardless of the money that is given, find it in your heart to tell us what happened,” said Beasley’s aunt, Laverne Beasley.
Laverne raised her nephew from the time he was 8 years old, and she said his death has been tough on their family.
“It’s hard. It’s actually hard for us to be at work,” she said. “We’ve having a lot of those moments, you know, where we can’t function. Because we don’t know what happened, we’re taking extra precautions to protect ourselves.”
Capt. Gregg Rector with Hoover PD said police believe Beasley was specifically targeted, but the reason is unknown.
“The typical reasons you might think someone would be targeted, that’s not going to be the case,” Rector said.
Beasley was not involved in a gang or drugs, Rector said, and the reason he was targeted may end up being something that seems trivial.
Rector said the last unsolved murder in the area was 11 years ago and that crime still haunts the department.
“We’re not going to let Xavier fall into that same category of unsolved crimes,” he said. “It’s been 21 days at 12:30 tonight since someone took Xavier’s life.”
Rector said they believe the suspect was waiting for Beasley to get to his car and then opened fire. There was no robbery attempt and no words exchanged before shots were fired. Rector also said no witnesses saw the getaway car or were able to provide a vehicle description.
To solve the case, Rector said they need anyone who has information to step forward.
“If someone takes someone else’s life, they generally tell someone,” Rector said. “We know there’s someone out there who knows something about this crime.”
Community Crime Chaplin Rev. Harry “Traveling Shoes” Turner asked people to let law enforcement do their job and to not take matters into their own hands.
“We definitely don’t want anyone taking the law into your own hands,” Turner said. “That’s what the police departments are for.”
Anyone with information related to the case can contact Crime Stoppers at 254-7777 or Sg.t Keith Czeskleba with Hoover PD at 822-5300 or 739-6795.
“We need to know as soon as possible,” Beasley said. “Today, please call Hoover police in reference to this because this tragedy has really hurt my family.”
