Larry Wooden heads for the end zone for the Jags.
The Spain Park Jaguars open their home football schedule Friday night when Hueytown visits at 7 p.m.
The Jags are coming off a tough 38-35 triple-overtime loss at Austin of Decatur. Austin's Ivan Torres kicked an 18-yard field goal for the winning points after the Black Bears had blocked Spain Park's attempted field goal.
“I thought both teams played their tails off, that’s all you can ask,” Spain Park coach Shawn Raney said after the game. “We just got to become better football players and do what we’re supposed to do, but I’m proud of them.”
Jaguar quarterback Joey Beatty passed for nearly 250 yards and two touchdowns, connecting with running back Larry Wooden and wide receiver Thomas Jordan. Wooden also ran for two touchdowns and Wade Streeter ran for a touchdown in overtime.
“Coming out of camp, you don’t know exactly where you’re at, so now we’ve got some stuff to build on, and we’ll get better,” Raney said.
Hueytown lost to Bessemer City 34-6.
