Utopias have been described for over 2400 years, and America has been home to more utopian efforts than any other country. Dystopias - visions of societies gone radically wrong - are a newer development. This course will draw from philosophy, politics, religion, economics, feminism, ecology and science to describe the growth of utopian thought and the development of utopian societies in American history, along with the rise of dystopian thought in art and history.
