The story revolves around Clara Donner, a relentless take-no-prisoners playwright. How does Clara seduce Andrew Lloyd Webber and the theatre world with blackmail, charm and a little bit of strudel? The play follows Clara’s antics to get her play professionally staged and the trials of the overworked producer she constantly hassles and harangues. Sophisticated fun for audience and performers alike! Mature language.
Taking on the two demanding roles are Texas Tech MFA Performance and Pedagogy candidate Reese Thompson and recent Birmingham Southern College graduate Christie Connolly. “I’m fortunate to work with these very talented actors as they bring such entertaining, eccentric and complicated characters to life,” states Gerrells. She goes on to say that working on an new play is a treat for a director, especially when the playwright is on hand to answer questions and offer suggestions. “Alan Litsey, Professor of Theatre at Birmingham Southern College, has been so generous with his time and support of our production.”
This is South City’s second production by a Birmingham playwright this season. In April SCT opened its new Pelham facility with “The Real Queen of Hearts Ain’t Even Pretty” by Birmingham’s Brad Bailey. “Supporting our local playwrights shines a spotlight on our homegrown talent and SCT is delighted to play its part by staging locally written plays, whenever we can,” explains Gerrells.
