Hoover-based Apex Roofing and Restoration recently installed its 1,500th FORTIFIED Roof, making the company the largest installer of FORTIFIED Roofs in the United States.
The milestone comes as Apex has expanded its operations well beyond Alabama, with the roofing company now working in markets stretching from Florida to Colorado and Illinois to Tennessee.
The FORTIFIED program is a voluntary building standard created in 2010 by the Insurance Institute for Business & Home Safety, or IBHS. The standard is designed to strengthen homes against severe weather and reduce the potential for property damage.
Apex's adoption of the FORTIFIED standard also has become part of the company's business growth strategy. Since beginning to offer FORTIFIED Roofs, the company reports its business margins have increased between 10% and 20%. Along the Gulf Coast, Apex said its revenue has grown 10% through sales of FORTIFIED Roofs.
The approach is intended to provide homeowners with additional protection against severe weather while reducing the potential financial consequences of storm damage.
A 2019 National Institute of Building Sciences report, "Natural Hazard Mitigation Saves," identified the FORTIFIED Roof designation as a particularly cost-effective method of mitigating hurricane hazards. According to the report, every $1.50 spent on mitigation produced approximately $8.60 in benefits associated with avoiding damage to buildings and their contents as well as homeowner relocation costs.
Apex reached the 1,500-roof milestone while competing in a large national industry. IBISWorld counted 98,980 roofing contractors in the United States in 2024.
The company's latest milestone places the Hoover business at the forefront of contractors using the FORTIFIED standard as Apex continues expanding its work across multiple states.
