The Hoover Police Department recently implemented a new language translation technology.
The Hoover Police Department has deployed a new mobile device used for real-time language interpretation for non-English speaking citizens.
The hands-free ELSA (Enabling Language Service Anywhere) device, utilizes cellular technology to connect directly with interpreters in 180 languages and dialects. It was developed for law enforcement, first responder medical units and healthcare facilities. Hoover officers began testing the devices several months ago and are the first to implement the technology in the state.
At the press of a button, these devices connect to a live, bilingual interpreter within seconds. The ELSA subscription also provides a toll free number for cell and landline use that provides the same service as the portable device. The 10 newly purchased units were recently deployed by patrol officers, detectives, 911 communications center employees, detention center officers and the police records division.
“Our department recognizes the challenges and ongoing need to communicate with non-English speaking individuals in the Hoover community. The ELSA devices will help us to overcome language barriers and improve the clarity of our communications," Hoover Police Chief Nick Derzis said.
